Breed diseases that you should know before raising them

A condition in which abnormal protein (amyloid) accumulates in the body's tissues. which is usually found mainly in the kidneys This causes kidney function to slowly deteriorate. PetMD states that this condition is rare in cats in general. But it is more common than average in Abyssinians and a few other breeds. and may spread to the liver as well
Care guidelines: There is no cure for it. The care is palliative. Emphasis is placed on monitoring and caring for deteriorating kidney (or liver) function under the guidance of a veterinarian.
Hereditary Enzyme Deficiency This causes red blood cells to have a shorter lifespan than normal and leads to a form of anemia. PetMD lists this condition as one of the genetic diseases that this breed should be screened for. It is also recommended to ask the breeder if the parents have been genetically tested for this condition.
Care guidelines: There is no specific treatment. The care is palliative. That is, monitor and care for anemia when symptoms occur. Genetic testing of cats used for breeding reduces the chance of passing this condition on to kittens.
Hereditary Macular Degeneration PetMD states that Abyssinian cats are at specific risk for a type of abnormal growth of photoreceptor cells in the retina early in their kitten life. This causes blindness often within a few months after birth.
Care guidelines: There is no treatment that restores vision. This type of blindness from PRA is permanent. Care therefore focuses on adjusting the home environment to suit cats who cannot see.
