Breed diseases that you should know before raising them

Birman cats are one of the few breeds in which a higher percentage of blood types are found than normal. This has been confirmed by published studies of cat blood group testing. If a mother cat with blood type B gives milk to kittens with blood type A Antibodies in the milk destroy a kitten's red blood cells within the first few days after birth. This is a life-threatening condition called hemolysis in newborn kittens.
Care guidelines: When this condition occurs, only supportive care and blood transfusions can be done if necessary. More important management is precautionary measures. By checking the blood type of the mother cat and the father before mating. If there is a risk of incompatibility Kittens may need to be separated from their mother's milk for the first 1-2 days and given alternative milk instead.
