Alaskan Malamutes are large, thick-boned dogs, and are therefore prone to hip and/or elbow joint abnormalities as they grow. Makes the joints loose and not tight. and leads to chronic pain and arthritis as we age.
Care guidelines: Mild cases are treated with weight control, pain relievers, and joint nourishment supplements. In severe cases, joint repair surgery may be required.
It is a genetic disorder found only in this breed. Puppies are born with legs that are disproportionately short and arched. This condition is directly caused by genetics. It is not caused by injury or food.
Care guidelines: There is no treatment that returns the skeleton to normal. Care therefore focuses on genetic testing of the parents to prevent this gene from being passed on to puppies.
