Breed diseases that you should know before raising them

The fluid pressure inside the eye increases because it cannot drain out properly. Damage to the retina and optic nerve. The VCA specifically lists basset hounds as one of the breeds at increased risk. Symptoms can be sudden and painful or accumulate gradually, and can lead to permanent blindness if not treated early.
Care guidelines: Use eye pressure relievers and pain relievers. Severe cases or those not responding to medication may require surgery. And eyes that are severely damaged and cause continued pain may need to be removed.
Basset Hounds' long, drooping ears trap more moisture and restrict ear canal ventilation than straight-eared dogs. This makes it easier for bacteria and fungi to grow. Symptoms include shaking the head, scratching the ears, and unusual fluid or odors coming from the ears.
