Breed diseases that you should know before raising them
Each disease below is based on veterinary resources listed at the end of the section. And also tell what the general maintenance is like. This does not mean that every dog or cat of this breed will. But it is a more common risk than other breeds.
The rings of cartilage that keep the trachea open become weaker and flatter. This causes coughing, a sound similar to geese bleating, and difficulty breathing. It is often worse when excited, in hot weather, or when the collar is pressed.
Care guidelines: Weight control Use a harness instead of a collar. (Pressure on the throat makes coughing worse) and use cough suppressants/anti-inflammatories for mild cases. A bronchial stent (stent) is surgically inserted in severe cases.
The patella slips out of its normal groove. Causes symptoms of intermittent lameness. Commonly found in small breed dogs with shallow knee joints.
Care guidelines: Rest and weight control for mild/occasional cases Surgery to enlarge the joint or realign the joint in dogs with frequent or painful patella dislocations.
